Three who could go, plus two who already have ...

With Wednesday's non-waiver trade deadline (4 p.m. ET) now less than 24 hours away, here's a look at three players who could get traded by the deadline (knocked down from five after Cliff Floyd and Ricardo Rincon were dealt Tuesday night):

Packing their bags?

Paul Byrd, Royals starting pitcher
Byrd touched 92 mph on the gun in winning his 14th game of the year Monday. And one scout in attendance said with no hesitation: "The one thing people are looking for is a guy to get the ball over the plate and keep you in the game. And he's probably the best guy in the American League who can do that."

But Royals general manager Allard Baird said he still isn't sure he'll move Byrd by 4 p.m., and said he'll only do it for a young player (at second or third base) who can be in his Opening-Day lineup next year.

Late Monday night, Baird was working on various deals believed to involve the Mariners, Cardinals and Mets -- including one three-team extravaganza. One rumor had Byrd going to Seattle for mega-touted infield prospect Antonio Perez (once a key component in the Junior Griffey deal). But a lot of pieces were yet to fall into place.

Roberto Hernandez

Roberto Hernandez, Royals closer
The Angels are actively searching for another power arm in the bullpen and were the runners-up to the Dodgers on Paul Shuey. But even though closer Troy Percival has since returned, Anaheim continues to shop.

Two AL club executives said Tuesday they've been chasing Hernandez. But clubs that have talked to the Angels say they're reluctant to mess with the chemistry of a team that's 30 games over .500 since the third week of the season. So there's a good chance that one won't happen before the deadline.

Livan Hernandez
Starting Pitcher

Livan Hernandez, Giants starting pitcher
During the All-Star break, Hernandez reportedly told the Giants he'd prefer to go elsewhere. So the Giants told him the best way to get traded was to start pitching better. Since then, he's ripped off four straight quality starts -- and has inspired some mild interest by the Cardinals and Mets.

But that interest appears to be no more than lukewarm. And the Giants would then have to go out and deal for another starting pitcher to replace him. So that one also seems unlikely before the deadline.

Heading for greener pastures ...
Cliff Floyd

Cliff Floyd, Ex-Expos OF
(TRADED TUESDAY)

There would have been no bigger upset between now and the deadline than to wake up Aug. 1 and find Floyd was still hanging out in Canada.

There were numerous signs Tuesday night pointing toward Floyd winding up in Boston, and it finally happened after the Expos finished their game against the D-Backs. The A's, Yankees, Mariners and Reds were also believed to be still in some degree of active pursuit, but the Sox got their man.

And although the Expos were interested in the Oakland package (thought to be left-hander John Rheinecker and second baseman Esteban German), Floyd has a no-trade to Oakland and didn't appear inclined to waive it.

Ricardo Rincon

Ricardo Rincon, Ex-Indians reliever
(TRADED TUESDAY)

The Indians have already dealt Bartolo Colon, Chuck Finley, Paul Shuey and Jolbert Cabrera. Rincon appears to be the last guy out of Cleveland before the deadline.

The A's, Yankees and Giants all stayed in the bidding, but Oakland won out, and Rincon won't be leaving town when the rest of the Indians depart Northern California this weekend.

Other rumors

  • The Phillies acquired Mike Timlin on Monday and were trying to shop him around Tuesday. The Red Sox are believed to have some interest in using him as a replacement for Arrojo.

  • Despite reports that the Phillies took the Cardinals package for Scott Rolen over a Reds offer of Brandon Larson, Scott Williamson and another top Reds prospect, indications are that they actually were on the verge of making the trade with Cincinnati on Monday afternoon. Then Reds owner Carl Lindner got nervous about the setting of an Aug. 16 strike date, lost confidence the Reds could re-sign Rolen and killed the deal.

  • Left-handed relievers who are no longer on the market: Pittsburgh's Scott Sauerbeck and the Phillies' Dan Plesac.

  • The Cardinals scouted Toronto's Chris Carpenter on Monday, but he's also all but off the market.

  • Tampa Bay's Paul Wilson has won two of his last 18 starts -- but mostly due to lack of run support. Wilson has made 11 quality starts, only two fewer than Pedro Martinez. The Astros, Reds and Diamondbacks all showed up to watch Wilson beat the Orioles on Monday, but no deal for him appeared imminent.

  • Clubs that have spoken with the Rangers say the Kenny Rogers market dried up after he turned down yet a second deal, to Arizona. And the Rangers have nothing at all going for Ismael Valdes or Ivan Rodriguez.

  • Rumors also circulated this week about an Angels deal that would have brought Juan Acevedo and possibly also Robert Fick. But Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has reportedly been telling other clubs he doesn't want to trade Acevedo right now.
